A second year student who is quite attached to Ryuko. She is often taken hostage or punished by other members of the academy. Because rank in the school determines ones living conditions, Mako resides in the poorer "slums" of the city with her mother, father (who is a back alley doctor), her delinquent younger brother and Guts, the family's pet pug.
